A lower bill, and an office that stays online
A four-person landscaping office moved off its copper phone lines, cut its phone bill, and stayed online when its provider canceled the line by mistake.

We were in major need of a technology upgrade. With a high number of incoming phone calls and only one line to receive them on, we were constantly missing out on potential sales. With the phone system that Magnetics put in place we are able to serve more customers. A five star experience for sure!
Mason, Managerbennettlandscapeinc.comWhat was wrong
The office was paying for old copper phone lines, bundled with its internet, and wanted the monthly bill down. When we first talked, new phones were all they wanted.
The rest of the setup needed work too. Wi-Fi coverage was patchy, the network had grown without a plan, and the internet dropped often. There was nowhere to keep schedules and customer photos that the office could still reach while it was down.
What went in
- Moved four desk phones off the copper lines onto UniFi Talk, with a softphone for one person who works in the field
- Re-terminated the existing Cat5e phone wiring for data and labeled every run
- Pulled two new runs the same day where the old wiring couldn’t be reused
- Replaced the network with a new gateway, a PoE switch and two access points
- Added a 5G backup that takes over automatically when the internet drops
- Installed file storage on site for backups, schedules and customer files, reachable even when the internet is down
- Put the network, phones and storage on a battery backup
What didn’t go to plan
We had planned around a cable internet connection. On site, it turned out to be DSL over the same copper lines we were moving the phones off. We got it working that same day, then helped the office move to a cable plan and the ISP dropped the fees it had been charging for the legacy service.
While the phone numbers were being transferred, the ISP canceled the office’s internet by mistake and couldn’t restore it quickly. We were on site within two hours with a 5G backup, and it kept the office online until the ISP put the line back.
What changed
We did the cutover after hours, so the office was never without phones or internet, and the monthly phone bill is down by 70%.
They’re happy with the phones, which carry a heavy volume of calls in and out. We also handled the caller ID and text messaging registration that carriers now require from businesses.
The 5G backup takes over every couple of weeks when the cable line drops, and the phones and internet keep working through it.
